John Pearson Marks

There has been, and continues to be, uncertainty over the stamped 'JP' mark within a circle. This has been recognized as the mark of John Pearson in Malcolm Haslam's book, Marks and Monograms of the Modern Movement. Others, notably Penlee House, have disagreed, and consider it to be the mark of a contemporary, Joseph Pengelly. The two marks do not generally appear together on the same item. Exceptionally and intriguingly, however, a piece may bear both the manuscript initial and the stamped monogram, as for example in the letter rack of 1905 shown on this site, or even the full signature and stamp, as on an 1894 silver charger sold at Woolley and Wallis auctioneers in 2006.
