Poole Studio History

Poole Studio Pottery of the period 1962-66 is generally recognised as one of the high points in creativity of the Poole pottery. On this part of our site are some examples of the work of the Poole Studio, including early vases, chargers, plates and dishes.

Scandinavian influence

Poole Studio was heavily influenced by Scandinavian style and philosophy. The Arabia factory in Finland was of particular importance in this regard. The Arabia philosophy promoted the individual artist.

Following the same tradition, the Poole Studio artists, notably Tony Morris and Robert Jefferson, produced pieces as 'one-off' artistic expressions. Crucially, unlike the later mass-produced pieces, they were allowed the luxury of time and a wide range of glazes to perfect their work. This is in marked contrast to the later mass-produced product of 1970s Poole Delphis. As such, Poole Studio pieces, even if unmarked, can be distinguished by their wider range of shapes and colours and by their individual decoration.

Some shapes are unique to Poole Studio. Some of these shapes are shown in our page on early Poole Studio Shapes. Although the pieces share a common shape, their individuality lies in their often rich decoration.

We would welcome images from other collectors to show alternative decoration of these shapes, and images of other shapes. We will acknowledge your contribution or ensure anonymity, as you prefer.
